Side Effects & Remedies
HEREIN: INTERNET RESEARCH ABOUT POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS, REMEDIES AND A KETOGENIC DIET AS FOUND IN CYBERLAND. THESE ARE NOT MEANT TO SUBSTITUTE THE ADVICE OF A LICENSED MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL!
As with any dietary or life change, your body may react in all different sorts of ways! There are no 100% free rides! This diet is very hard to do and even harder to maintain, this is why I created KETO-TO-GO – at first I created foods that I could eat and enjoy so that I would stick to this diet. And then...I realized how hard this diet is to maintain so I figured I would manufacture and share my yummy, great ideas with others who want to try this path.
I have learned that there are a few side effects from this diet (I have not experienced any of them but I have heard that some others have). Most of these side effects are fairly simple to reverse and remedies are listed below for each one that I could find in any of the videos and literature on the Internet. Here they are below including a strong suggestion and request that if you are taking on this diet, that you work with a licensed dietician or nutritionist together with a medical professional of your choice, whether a doctor, naturopath or chiropractor, anyone that can help and (most importantly) advise you if this is the right path for you. Try to pick a professional that is knowledgeable on the KETOGENIC DIET. Not all doctors are. My doctor certainly wasn’t and she advised me against it. However, she was not my only professional medical consultant. Thank God for that! Remember: I’m not a doctor I am only on the path of healing myself and sharing the information I find with others. This should not take the place of you consulting with the proper medical professional of your choice!
WARNING TO PATIENTS TAKING ANY SORT OF MEDICATIONS LIKE INSULIN OR OTHER PRESCRIPTIONS: DO NOT DO THIS DIET WITHOUT APPROVAL OF YOUR DOCTOR, MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL OR DIETICIAN IN COORDINATION WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN. THIS DIET DOES NOT MIX WITH CERTAIN MEDICATIONS. PLEASE CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR!

Important Note if on medication for Diabetes or High Blood Pressure
Avoiding the carbohydrates that raise your blood sugar decreases your need for medication to lower it. Taking the same dose of insulin as you did prior to adopting a low-carb diet might result in low blood sugar. One of the main symptoms of this is heart palpitations. You need to monitor your blood sugar frequently when starting this diet and adapt (lower) your medication. This should be done with the assistance of a knowledgeable physician.

High Blood Pressure
On a low-carb diet an elevated blood pressure tends to improve (normalize). This reduces the need for medication and your dosage may become too strong, leading to low blood pressure. One of the symptoms of this can be an increased pulse and heart palpitations. If you experience this it’s wise to check your blood pressure (here’s a good home monitor). If it’s low – e.g. under 110/70 – you should contact your doctor to discuss possibly reducing or discontinuing your blood pressure medication.

- REMEDY 3: SLOW DOWN your TRANSITION TO KETOSIS by eating some VEGGIE CARBS – and do your transition more gradually.
-

Frequent Urination (creates dehydration)

- REMEDY 2: Find a high quality mineral supplement to replace lost minerals from dehydration
- Low Blood Sugar.
-

- REMEDY 1: EAT AN ENERGY ORB (see my menu in desserts and treats) or a KETO FAT BOMB. (after trying the water)
- REMEDY 2: Eat a Pumpkin Muffie (see my menu for desserts and treats) this has a mild amount of high fiber and extremely healthy carbohydrates that will make you feel better and give you a slight healthy carb blood sugar bump.
- REMEDY 3: Lie down and rest and wait for the muffie to be absorbed into your blood.
- REMEDY 4: SLOW DOWN your induction into the Keto Diet and do it more gradually so you give your blood sugar some time to get used to your new program. Sudden changes can be a shock to your system. "Easy does it" is always a good policy. If you have been eating processed carbs and sugars, simply cutting those out at first and eating more of my veggie yummies and desserts, until your blood sugar and insulin imbalances calm down, could be a better path before going crazy and cutting all the way down on your carbs.
TYPICAL SIDE EFFECTS THAT CAN HAPPEN
-
Kidney Stones
- Take Supplements with Calcium Citrate
- Supplement diet with fresh Lemons in make home made lemonade or get KETO-TO-GO-LEMONATORS (Lemon Hydrators) – It is well-documented that lemons and fresh squeezed lemon juices dissolve kidney stones if used regularly. This is why I created my LEMONATORS – to make SURE we are well hydrated and that our kidneys know we love them!
-
Weight Loss
- If not desired, eat more approved of foods and get more calories.
-
Constipation
- Due to dehydration – drink more water. Drink more lemon water or KETO-TO-GO LEMONATORS. I have added Unrefined Sea Salt to each LEMONATOR in order to help keep some of the water in our bodies.
- Add more probiotics to your supplements.
- Add more fiber from non-starchy vegetables, nuts, seeds and carb-free psyllium seed husks that can be dissolved in water.
-
Bad Breath –
- REMEDY 1: ½ Teaspoon Unrefined Celtic Sea Salt in 16-20 ounces of water.
- Or REMEDY 1-B: ½ teaspoon Unrefined Celtic Sea Salt in 16-20 ounces of bullion, tea or broth.

- Switch from full time ketosis diet to part time KETO: by initiating intermittent fasting and just eating low carb (like around 50-70 net carbs daily) instead of 20-50 net carbs daily. OR just take it easy, cut out the sugars, grains and processed carbs. Your results will show up slower, but you will just be more moderate in your approach to this diet. LOW CARB, HIGH FAT but not all the way into Ketosis is also good and will have loads of yummy health benefits – just from cutting out the grains, sugars and processed foods!
BEWARE THE BOOZE WHEN ON THIS DIET!!!
ALCOHOL TOLERANCE: QUOTE FROM https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/side-effects#inductionflu
Low Carb and Alcohol Tolerance
When on a strict low-carb diet most people need significantly less alcohol to get intoxicated. So be careful the first time you drink alcohol on a low carb diet. Possibly, you only need half as many drinks as usual to enjoy yourself the most. Low carb will save you money at the bar.
The reasons for this common experience is still unclear. It could be because the liver is busy producing ketones or glucose, and thus has less capacity to spare for burning alcohol, slowing down the process.
Alternatively, it could be because alcohol and sugar (fructose) is partly broken down in similar ways in the liver. Eating less sugar could thus make your liver temporarily less adapted to break down alcohol, just like drinking less alcohol would.
No matter the reason, you’ll likely tolerate less alcohol on a low carb diet. Be prepared for it.
Obviously, if you’re going to be driving, be extra careful. Don’t ever drink and drive, period.
